Athrotaxis mesibovii was named by Hill et al. (1993) [Type Locality: Lea River, Tasmania.
Specimens Examined: LEA-1094-1104, LRR1-1073,1076,1117, P-430, 1153-1157.]. Its type specimen is Holotype: LEA-1104, stored in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a cuticle (Leaves), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lea River, which is in an Oligocene terrestrial siltstone in Australia.

R. S. Hill et al. 1993 | Leaves 3-8 mm long, loosely spreading and strongly keeled. Stomates in two broad bands on either side of the keel on the adaxial surface and possibly in restricted areas of the leaf base on the abaxial surface. A poorly developed apical frill may be present towards the apex of the leaf. Bract scale of ovuliferous cone well developed both apically and basally, covering the ovuliferous scale, but not tapering apically. |
