Taxonomy
Aganaster was named by Miller and Gurley (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l]. Its type is Protaster gregarius. It is the type genus of Aganasteridae.

It was assigned to Ophiurinidae by Owen (1965); to Aganasterinae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Aganasteridae by Stürtz (1899), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1925), Jell (1997); and to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
