Taxonomy
Ophiopetra was named by Enay and Hess (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Ophiopetra lithographica. It is the type genus of Ophiopetrinae.

It was assigned to Ophiodermatidae by Enay and Hess (1962), Spencer and Wright (1966); to Aplocomidae by Hess (1965), Hess (1972); to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophiopetrinae by Hess and Meyer (2008).
