Taxonomy
Ophiothrix was named by Müller and Troschel (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Ophiothricidae.

It was assigned to Ophiothricidae by Ljungman (1867), Matsumoto (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966), Jagt (2000); to Ophiurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophiotrichidae by O'Hara et al. (2018).
