Agathis tasmanica

Taxonomy
Agathis tasmanica was named by Hill and Bigwood (1987) [Twenty specimens of of A. tasmanica have been recovered from the Little Rapid River deposit, and several of these are complete leaves.]. Its type specimen is LRR 1-003, housed in the Botany Department, University of Tasmania., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Little Rapid River 1, which is in an Oligocene fluvial-lacustrine mudstone in Australia.

R. S. Hill and A. J. Bigwood 1987Leaves bilateral, linear to lanceolate, 43 to at least 75 mm long, 8-21 mm wide. Leaf base tapering to a broad petiole, apex rounded to almost acute. Margin entire, flat, and not appreciably thickened. Veins numerous, unbranching, parallel and inconspicuous. Leaf hypostomatous. Stomatal arrangement predominantly oblique, usually between 40° and 80° from the long axis of the leaf, in numerous long rows parallel to the long axis of the leaf. Guard cells sunken below subsidiary cells. Florin rings conspicuous. Stomatal apparatus 34 µm long (29-38 µm), 25 µm wide (19-31 µm). Mean number of subsidiary cells 4.4 (4-5). Stomatal plugs present.
