Libocedrus leaensis was named by Paull and Hill (2009) [Leaf specimens examined (8). LEA-1004, 1639, 1607, 3091, 3313, 3417, 3693, 5254.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: LEA-3693 stored in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the University of Adelaide, South Australia., a fertile axis (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lea River, which is in an Oligocene terrestrial siltstone in Australia.

R. Paull and R. S. Hill 2009Fertile branchlet with frequent alternate branching in same plane. Ovulate cones terminal on short branchlets, bracts elongate. Lateral leaves fused for about half their length, with bluntly acute apices, entire margins, and ventral surface stomata protected by overlying leaves. Facial leaves with few stomata on ventral leaf surfaces. All external surface stomata with high-ridged and lobed Florin rings.
