Pantostylops minutus was named by Ameghino (1901). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Río Chico Oeste, which is in a Lutetian/Bartonian terrestrial horizon in Argentina. It is the type species of Peripantostylops.
It was recombined as Peripantostylops minutus by Ameghino (1904), Simpson (1948).
