Astrapothericulus emarginatus was named by Ameghino (1904) [Tipo del sinónimo. MACN A 52-416, holotipo de Astrapothericulus peninsulatus, un molar superior aislado (figurado en Ameghino, 1904b:fig.326).]. Its type specimen is MACN A 52-423, a set of teeth (molar superior aislado), and it is a 3D body fossil.
