J. Kriwet 2000 | The skull gives some additional information on the taxonomy of the species. The dermal tesserae of the cheek region and the scaled gular in combination with styliform prehensile teeth on the premaxillae and dentalosplenials and a mesethmoid bone which is covered anteriorly with dermal tesserae is characteristic for Gyrodontoidei sensu Nursall (1996). Nursall (1996) united in his Gyrodontoidei the Gyrodontidae and Mesturidae.
Gyrodus is characterized inter alia by the presence of a rather short and pyriform maxilla without teeth. In contrast, the maxilla of Mesturus is at least twice as long as wide and narrow with the ventral and dorsal margins more or less parallel (Fig. 7). The presence of Gyrodus-type maxilla in combination with typical Gyrodus-like teeth in the Chilean species supports its attribution to Gyrodus. |
