Protophyllocladoxylon was named by Krausel (1939). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Protophyllocladoxylon leuchsi.

It was assigned to Gymnospermophyta by Andrews (1970); and to Coniferales by Chandra and Tewari (1991).
