Taxonomy
Megachasma applegatei was named by Shimada et al. (2014). Its type specimen is LACM 122190, a tooth (complete tooth), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pyramid Hill Sand Member grit zone, which is in a Chattian marine sandstone in the Jewett Formation of California.

K. Shimada et al. 2014Megachasmid differing from all known species of Megachasma by having teeth with apicobasally shorter crowns that have strong lingual cusp inclination and commonly with one pair of lateral cusplets, and with massive bilobate roots with robust lingual protuberance.
