Plotus anhinga was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Anhinga anhinga by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Alvarez (1977), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Kilmer and Steadman (2016) and Clements et al. (2017).
