Taxonomy
Hesperopetes jamesi was named by Emry and Korth (2007). Its type specimen is CM 76141, a tooth (left m1 or m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Harris Ranch Unit E Silt, which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in South Dakota.
