Ptychopyge trinodosa was named by Zhang (1981). Its type specimen is XTR 202, an exoskeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Mioptychopyge.
It was recombined as Mioptychopyge trinodosa by Zhou et al. (1998).
