Areoligera was named by Lejeune-Carpentier (1938). It is not extant. Its type is Areoligera senonensis. It is the type genus of Areoligeraceae.
It was assigned to Dinophyceae by Andrews (1970); and to Areoligeraceae by Lejeune-Carpentier (1938), Guler et al. (2014).
