Sauropus sydnensis was named by Dawson (1891). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is the type species of Baropezia.
It was recombined as Palaeosauropus sydenensis by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Baropezia sydnensis by Matthew (1903), Matthew (1904), Hay (1930), Haubold (1971).
