Pelecyogyra fezouataensis
Taxonomy
Pelecyogyra fezouataensis was named by Ebbestad and Lefebvre (2015). Its type specimen is MHNM.15690.194, a shell (internal mould preserving shell shape), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Z-F05. Zagora, Beni Zoli, which is in a Tremadocian offshore siltstone/limestone in the Lower Fezouata Formation of Morocco. It is the type species of Pelecyogyra.

Diagnosis

|---|---|---|
| J. O. R. Ebbestad and B. Lefebvre 2015 | Shell large, up to 27 mm in length, sinistral with 3 whorls. Low translation down the axis and rapidly expanding whorls, creating a shell wider than high, with the wide arc of the adapertural part of the shell shaped like the head of an axe. Ornamentation of fine and dense lirae.
Shell sinistral, max 27 mm in width, with 3 rapidly expanding whorls. Translation down the axis probably low, giving a high apical angle. During coiling the whorls are barely contiguous, giving an open umbilicus, with succeeding whorls slightly embracing earlier whorls at about mid height of the whorl. At the suture the shell is acutely recurved to form an impressed suture, while the outer surface forms a gently convex slope outward. The height of the whorl is lower than the width, giving a narrow, elongate whorl profile. Protoconch paucispiral, consisting of about one whorl without visible ornament and with a diameter of about 0.4 mm. On the upper surface the shell is thin. Ornamentation consists of thin, evenly and densely spaced rounded ribs that do not change in prominence during ontogeny but get proportionally larger with growth. The ribs are separated by much narrower depression between each rib. Ornamentation is not mirrored on the internal moulds, where more irregularly spaced zones/bands of variable width and hardly any relief are seen. Overlying these features is a surface that often appears creased and wrinkled. The shape of the dorsal apertural lip is prosocyrt, and it forms a wide arc from the suture to the periphery resembling the wide blade of an axe. The lower surface may bear gently opisthocyrt growth lines. The aperture is pseudo-tangential. |
