Echinodiscus was named by Leske (1778) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scutellidae by Nagao (1928); to Astriclypeidae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966), Lindley (2001); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
