Desmatippus nebrascensis

Taxonomy
Parahippus nebrascensis was named by Peterson (1907) [also said to be 1907]. Its type specimen is CM 1440, a partial skeleton (a skull with the left mandible practically complete, the pelvis, the right femur, tibia, calcaneum, astragalus, and the proximal end of a metapodial of one indi), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Niobrara Canyon, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Marsland Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Desmatippus nebrascensis by MacFadden (1998).

H. F. Osborn 1918(Peterson, 1907) (1) An animal of large size. (2) Premolars of proportionately large size when compared with molars, p2 the longest tooth of premolar series; (3) protostyle of p2 unusually well developed; (4) posterointernal tubercle of m2 [hypostyle] more highly developed than in P. texanus. (5) Lachrymal fossa plainly indicated; (6) anterior border of orbit opposite anterior portion of m3; (7) orbit closed posteriorly.
(Osborn, 1918) (1) Hypostyle of molars and premolars subtriangular; (2) crochet developed on metaloph of p4, m3; (3) metaloph uniting throughout grinding series, pLm3, with ectoloph; (4) dentition brachyodont, robust.
