Dicynodon lacerticeps was named by Owen (1845). Its type specimen is NHMUK 36233, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tarka prolongation of the Winterberg Range, which is in a Wuchiapingian/Changhsingian terrestrial horizon in South Africa.
