Trogon gallicus was named by Milne-Edwards (1871). It is the type species of Paratrogon.
It was recombined as Paratrogon gallicus by Milne-Edwards (1867), Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1952) and Olson (1985); it was recombined as Apaloderma gallica by Mlikovsky (2002).
