Palaeocypraea burlingtonensis was named by Schilder (1932) [= Cypraea (Aricia) mortoni Gabb, 1860: GABB, 1861:104 [in part]; WHITFIELD, 1892a:120, 291, pi. 15, figs. 1-3; WHITFIELD, 1892b:120,291, pi. 15, figs. 1-3; WHITNEY, 1928:154. Not Cypraea mortoni Gabb, 1860 [=Eocypraea (E.) mortoni (Gabb), q.v.]; Cypraea mortoni Gabb, 1860: MEEK, 1864:19 [in part]; COOK, 1868:729; JOHNSON, 1905:23; WELLER, 1907:722-723 [in part], pi. 84, figs. 1-2; WHITNEY, 1928:154 [in part]; RICHARDS & RAMSDELL, 1962:47, pi. 53, fig. 9, pi. 64, fig. 6. Not Cypraea mortoni Gabb, 1860.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 13537, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Burlington County, which is in a Campanian/Campanian marine marl in the Marshalltown Formation of New Jersey.

It was recombined as Bernaya (Bernaya) burlingtonensis by Schilder and Schilder (1971), Groves (1990), Groves et al. (2011).
