Eoceornis was named by Shufeldt (1915). Its type is Eoceornis ardetta.

It was assigned to Aves by Shufeldt (1915); to Botaurinae by Hay (1930); to Ardeidae by Lambrecht (1933); and to Ardeinae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956).
