Euprotogonia patagonica was named by Ameghino (1901). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Colhué Huapí Norte, which is in a Bartonian terrestrial horizon in Argentina.
It was recombined as Notoprotogonia patagonica by Ameghino (1904); it was recombined as Ernestokokenia patagonica by Simpson (1948) and Gelfo (2010).
