Taxonomy
Pelecanus carbo was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Phalacrocorax.

It was recombined as Phalacrocorax carbo by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Worthy (1998), Mlikovsky (2002), Louchart et al. (2008), Boles (2010), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Kilmer and Steadman (2016), Clements et al. (2017) and Worthy and Nguyen (2020).
