Emys protogaea was named by Meyer (1852). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Haslach, which is in an Aquitanian terrestrial horizon in Germany.
It was recombined as Ocadia protogaea by Reinach (1900); it was recombined as Promalacoclemmys protogaea by Hervet (2004).
