Clemmys guntiana was named by Roger (1902). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Günsburg turtle, which is in a Langhian terrestrial sandstone in the Günsburger Sandstone Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Mauremys guntiana by Schleich (1982), Hervet (2004).
