Emys portisi was named by Sacco (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Valleandona, which is in a Zanclean marine sandstone in the Valldunga Formation of Italy.
It was recombined as Palaeochelys portisi by De Stefano (1915); it was recombined as Mauremys portisi by Hervet (2004).
