Hardistiella was named by Janvier and Lund (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l]. Its type is Hardistiella montanensis.

It was assigned to Petromyzontida by Janvier and Lund (1983); to Petromyzoniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hardistiellidae by Van Der Laan (2019).
