It was synonymized subjectively with Myxinoides by Gadow (1898); it was reranked as the unranked clade Hyperotreti by Poplin et al. (2001), Takezaki et al. (2003); it was misspelled as Hyperotreta by Jordan (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Myxiniformes by Long (2011), Nelson et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Marsipobranchii by Jordan (1963); to Chordata by Poplin et al. (2001); and to Agnatha by Takezaki et al. (2003).
