Poraspis was named by Kiaer (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid D Gedi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Holaspis sericeus.

It was assigned to Poraspidinae by Elliott and Petriello (2011); and to Poraspidae by Kiaer (1932) and Van Der Laan (2019).

Rostral region narrowing in front of orbits; anterior border has a slight median convexity; maxillary brim broad, covered with ridges parallel to anterior edge. Postbranchial lobe of dorsal shield generally long and strongly developed. Posterior margins of dorsal and ventral shields bear pronounced, rounded, median lobes. Dentine ridges fine, 7–13 per mm; ridge pattern mostly longitudinal but may be fanned or irregular on rostrum and anterior triangle of dorsal shield; generally one or more ridges parallel to anterior edge of shield. Epitega indicated faintly or not at all. Pineal macula distinct. Lateral line pores and canals large.
