Taxonomy
Pteraspis was named by Kner (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi-u D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Cephalaspidae by Huxley (1861); to Pteraspidae by Hay (1902), Bryant (1932) and Jordan (1963); to Pteraspidinae by Denison (1970); to Pteraspididae by Woodward (1891) and Blieck (1984); to Pteraspidomorphes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pteraspidoidei by Randle and Sansom (2017).

R. H. Denison 1970Moderate-sized pteraspids. The rostrum somwhat elongate and with a preoral field developed on at least the posterior part of its ventral preoral surface. Branchial openings well in advance of the postero-lateral corners of the dorsal shield, and bounded by branchial and well-developed cornual plates.
