Cypraea cernica was named by Sowerby (1870).

It was recombined as Erosaria (Erosaria) cernica by Schilder (1930); it was recombined as Cypraea (Erosaria) cernica by Abrard (1942); it was recombined as Erosaria cernica by Cernohorsky (1971).
