Stachyodes was named by Bargatzky (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 363]. It is the type genus of Stachyoditidae.
It was assigned to Stachyodidae by Stearn (1996); to Stachyoditidae by Stearn et al. (1999); and to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
