Symmorium was named by Cope (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,451,898]. Its type is Symmorium reniforme.
It was assigned to Cladodontidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); to Symmoriida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Symmoriidae by Zangerl (1981), Williams (1985), Goto et al. (1988), Ivanov (1999) and Ginter et al. (2010).
