Syntomodus was named by Obruchev (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: P u]. Its type is Syntomodus abbreviatus.

It was assigned to Helicoprionidae by Obruchev (1964); to Eugeneodontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Edestidae by Zangerl (1981), Ginter et al. (2010).
