Tristychius was named by Agassiz (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise Sepkoski's reference number: 451].

It was assigned to Cestraciontidae by Woodward (1889); to Heterodontidae by Jordan (1963); to Hybodontoidea by Zangerl (1981); to Ctenacanthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tristychiidae by Ginter et al. (2010).
