Dalatias was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 453]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Jordan (1963) and Long (1992); to Dalatiinae by Keyes (1984) and Yabe and Hirayama (1998); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dalatiidae by Jordan (1907), Sykes (1971) and Carrillo-Briceño et al. (2016).
