Etmopterus was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant. Its type is Squalus spinax.
It was assigned to Squalidae by Jordan (1963); to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Etmopteridae by Cahuzac et al. (2007), Underwood and Schlogl (2013).
