Taxonomy
Brachaelurus was named by Ogilby (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 525,884]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Brachaeluridae.

It was assigned to Orectolobidae by Jordan (1963), Cappetta and Case (1975) and Bryant (1989); to Orectolobiformes by Sepkoski (2002) and Underwood (2006); and to Brachaeluridae by Guinot et al. (2014).
