Taxonomy
Hemiscyllium was named by Smith (1837) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant. Its type is Squalus ocellatus.

It was assigned to Hemiscyllidae by Case (1991); to Orectolobiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemiscylliidae by Jordan (1963), Noubhani and Cappetta (1997), Underwood and Mitchell (1999), Cahuzac et al. (2007), Kriwet et al. (2007), Case et al. (2015), Cappetta et al. (2019), Adnet et al. (2020), Guinot et al. (2023).
