Palaeohypotodus was named by Glikman (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884,958]. Its type is Otodus rutoti.

It was assigned to Jaekelotodontidae by Glikman (1964), Herman (1977); to Lamniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Odontaspididae by Cvancara and Hoganson (1993), Cappetta and Nolf (2005), Popov and Lopyrev (2024).
