Breviacanthus was named by Maisey (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 452,884].

It was assigned to Rhinobatidae by Cappetta (1987); to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protospinacidae by Underwood and Ward (2004).
