Apocopodon was named by Cope (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 2,884]. Its type is Apocopodon sericeus.

It was assigned to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myliobatidae by Cope (1885), Cope (1886), Woodward (1889), Cappetta (1987), De Pasqua et al. (2025).
