Savannasaurus was named by Poropat et al. (2016). Its type is Savannasaurus elliottorum.
It was assigned to Titanosauria by Poropat et al. (2016) and Poropat et al. (2020); and to Diamantinasauria by Poropat et al. (2021), Rigby et al. (2021), Poropat et al. (2023) and Beeston et al. (2024).
