Acanthorhina was named by Fraas (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar]. Its type is Acanthorhina jaekeli.

It was assigned to Chimaeriformes by Fraas (1910); to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002); and to Myriacanthidae by Duffin (1983), Nelson (2006).
