Cymatodus was named by Newberry and Worthen (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: teeth; Junior homonym described by Trautschold, 1879]. It is not extant. Its type is Cymatodus oblongus.
It was assigned to Petalodontidae by Hay (1902); to Janassidae by Jordan (1963); and to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002).
