Erismacanthus was named by M'Coy (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: spine]. It is not extant. Its type is Erismacanthus jonesii.
It was assigned to Ichthyodorulites by Hay (1902); to Cochliodontidae by Eastman (1903); and to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002).
