Metopacanthus was named by Zittel (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine J Toar Sepkoski's reference number: 452]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Myriacanthidae by Duffin (1983); and to Holocephali by Sepkoski (2002).
