Fissodus was named by St. John and Worthen (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: C l C Pn]. It is not extant. Its type is Fissodus bifidus.
It was assigned to Petalodontidae by Woodward (1889), Hay (1902); to Petalodontida by Zangerl (1981), Sepkoski (2002); and to Janassidae by Jordan (1963), Ginter et al. (2010).
